Betsie Wassenaar and Ton Bals established Bureaubewust in 1993, because very few sustainable office supplies were available in the Netherlands in those days. They supplied sustainable office products to businesses through a catalogue. A year later the store at the Zakkendragerssteeg was opened in order to make their products accessible to consumers.

In the course of time the assortment has been expanded with sustainable products for working and living, office supplies and gifts. A sample from the assortment: recycled paper, laptop bags made from recycled truck tires, bags from cork, organizers made of European scrap wood, bamboo coffee cups, notebooks and bamboo socks from Braintree.
